With Commonwealth Games around the corner, and development on different fronts, the Capital city can finally hold its niche among the great metropolises of the world. The year 2010 will be bringing good fortune for Delhi and its citizens. Driving through metalled roads across the suspension bridge over the Yamuna or taking a skybus to reach office in time would be no more a utopia for the Delhites.
Commonwealth Games and its iconic nature is fast transforming the physical image of Delhi in best possible way. The infrastructure juggernaut that seemed to have lost its pace after the year 1982 Asian Games is back into the action with Delhi winning the bid for catering the Commonwealth games in 2010. With Beijing close on the heels of Delhi in cashing the Games’ Euphoria, the city known for China's finest museums is going to witness the largest construction projects for the 2008 Olympic Games.
Commonwealth Village in Delhi will spread over 63.5 hectares. 21 hectares will be reserved for use of general public and 26 hectares will have a green patch with 16.5 hectares earmarked for residential space.
Construction work is lined up to start in June-July this year and all competition venues for different sport disciplines are likely to be finished by October 2009. The Commonwealth village will feature a residential zone and an international one as well. While the former will provide accommodation to around 7,500 competitors and officials, the latter would have an array of amenities like accreditation centre, ceremonial plaza, retail facilities, media centre and entertainment outlets.
Apart from the Commonwealth village, Delhi is also drawing up plans to accommodate the large number of tourists expected to besiege the event in 2010. No stone will left upturned to offer overseas guests with an array of amenities at par with international standards. Delhi Development Authority is looking at the completion of around 7,000 hotel rooms has been slated for completion out of total requirement of about 50,000 rooms. Moreover, the agency is also looking forward to construct an additional of 1,500 rooms thereby making it a total of 8,500.
Delhi will certainly emerge as a sparkling, new city in the light of all the major facelift activities including better connectivity, new sports complex, improved infrastructure, and no water and electricity shortages.
